The telecommunications revolution which contributed to China’s economic miracle has also made it much more difficult to govern. People have access to information and they have demands. Citizens are bitter about corruption, nepotism and the lack of rule of law, and they complain about inflation, unemployment, contaminated food, pollution and a weak social security system.
