The independent professional development service for investment portfolio construction practitioners

G'day

This is our last Forum Fodder for 2014 - and, as usual for the end of each year, we highlight suggested holiday season reading. We've picked a dozen perspectives from the plethora we've published this year which should not be missed!  We think they'll each contribute materially to your portfolio construction continuing professional development and challenge your views in prep for 2015.

One last "assignment" for the year! Don't forget to register for Markets Summit (17 Feb 2015). The theme is "Cyclical? Structural? Secular?" The US is winding down its QE program, but Japan and Europe are ramping up. Australia's golden era of prosperity is over. Oil prices have fallen over 35%

in 12 months. Currency wars are well underway. With divergence a global theme, which cyclical, structural and secular issues are really driving the outlook for markets?

We look forward to contributing further to your portfolio construction knowledge, wisdom and skills in 2015.

Meanwhile, all the best for a relaxing and safe holiday season - Graham

PERSPECTIVES - Holiday season reading

Capitalism, inequality, and Piketty
Thomas Piketty’s "Capital in the Twenty‐First Century" is certainly the economics book of the year. We have been asked numerous times to appraise his ideas.
Dr Woody Brock, SED

The single-engine global economy
The global economy is like a jetliner that needs all of its engines operational to take off. Unfortunately, only one of its four engines is functioning properly.
Nouriel Roubini, Roubini Global Economics

Rates are going up - so don't buy fixed interest?
Everyone knows bond rates are going up - so why would you buy fixed interest? Actually, there are three really good reasons.
Tim Farrelly, farrelly's
Opinion

Prepare to change course
Warning, there may be rocks ahead. Reconnecting risk and return must surely be the right focus - but thinking conventional tools will keep us out of trouble may be a big mistake.
Alan Brown, Schroders
Insight

The Yin and Yang of retirement income philosophies
This white paper serves up a retirement income planning "buffet" - reviewing the two main opposing philosophies and the range of strategies that span the divide.
Angela Ashton, PortfolioConstruction Forum
Research

Managing sequencing risk - buckets v rebalancing
In managing sequencing risk, we may not be giving simple rebalancing nearly the credit it deserves to accomplish similar or better results than more complex approaches.
Michael Kitces, Pinnacle Advisory Group
Research paper

Safe withdrawal rates in retirement - an Australian perspective
A new research paper looks specifically at withdrawal rates in the Australian context, confirming the legislated minimums for account-based pensions are much too high.

Backgrounder: Finology - where investing meets investors
This Backgrounder introduces the most important ideas within the emerging (and converging) research field that is finology, and some of applications to managing client portfolios.

Invest in communicating about investing
As investment professionals, we live investing every day. We spend excessive time reporting and not enough 'rapporting.'
Prof Jack Gray, UTS
Opinion

The power of the 3rd R
To flourish in the robo-advice era, portfolio construction practitioners must provide clients with a positive Return on Attention (ROA), Intimacy (ROI) and Empathy (ROE).
Dr David Lazenby, ScenarioNow Inc
Resources

Slick LICs
IPOs of LICs continue. But LICs have unique challenges and complexities that make them a complicated investment decision - which is certainly not the way they are marketed.
Dominic McCormick, Select Asset Management
Opinion

Insights for evaluating active management
Statistics rarely tell the story clearly. With trial and error, I found that looking at three dimensions of performance assisted my interpretation.
Don Ezra, Russell Investments
