I've been thinking about... the economy in the new reality

Summary

Our opening keynote session at the 2009 PortfolioConstruction Conference debated the likely shape of the global economic recovery, and the implications for markets and portfolios. Would the recovery be V-shaped - a rapid rebound in economy and markets, as many were hoping? Or L-shaped with the economy struggling sideways for years? Or, perhaps, a W, bringing a double-dip downturn as government stimulus fades? U-shaped, a longer than usual downturn, followed by an eventual return to prosperity? Or the more exotic square root- shaped recovery, giving us a quick rebound later followed by flat growth in the longer term?
